Bob Marley Promo Posters and much more......
Some details that need sorting out are the official Bob Marley & The Wailers promotional
posters. What is shown below is a good sample of what posters were issued, mostly by Island. Along with Island and Tuff
Gong, many other record labels produced Marley posters to promote their respective albums. Starting in 1975 Island Records issued some
of their promo posters with a number. It was not just the Island reggae posters that were numbered, some other types of music
got issued numbered posters. Not all reggae posters had a number and not all Marley posters received a number. The numbered
posters started in 1975 with #1 which was a black and white shot of Bob at 56 Hope Road. It is a shot of Bob taken by Kim
Gottlieb-Walker who was one of the staff photographers for Island. From what I know the Island numbered posters stopped at
#104 which is a live shot of Bob. PLEASE email me with any additional poster info or corrections.
Below you will also find some samples of Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer,
Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers and the I-Three posters, adverts and flats.
Table of Contents:
NOTE: All Photos below come from my personal collection except where
noted. This page is mainly dealing with PROMOTIONAL posters and not concert posters.
The main goal is to list all of the album promo posters (especially 1973-1983). The
adverts, flats etc... are just a sampling from my collection that are posted for interest purposes only.

Posters (Some very cool posters in this section)
The Island logo has had at least 5 different looks over the years.
Below are some examples of the logo used during Bob's time on Island Records as well as the logo currently used.

With The Wailers first Island release Catch a Fire (1972/1973), this is the logo Island used for the
promotional posters, adverts and music releases. It is a solid "I" and was used for The Wailers between 1972/73
and 1976. What is strange is that the majority of releases through 1976 used this logo except a few. All of Bunny Wailers
promotional items for his 1976 Blackheart Man and other Island items used the new logo shown below. Also the advert (as
seen far below) for Marley's 1975 'Live' album somehow used the newer logo as well as the 1976 Rastaman Vibration Scrapbook. The
logo changed on ALL items in 1977 with the release of Exodus. Adverts for Rastaman Vibration (June 26, 1976) used the
solid "I" logo and adverts for Bunny Wailer's Blackheart Man (Oct, 16, 1976) used the "I" logo with the
palm tree. So, barring the "Live" advert and the Rastaman Vibration Scrapbook we can assume Island started to fade
out the solid "I" in the late summer/early fall of 1976.
A new book about Island Records was
published in early 2009 to celebrate 50 years of music. Maybe this book explains the logo as well as the numbering system
for the reggae promo posters! (Update on book info...NOPE sadly no info about logo or numbering system.)
There was even an earlier book released by Island called The Island Book of Posters. Sadly this book too is very
limited on quality information. In fact, if I'm correct, they have a major inaccuracy of the one Bob Marley poster they
feature. They show the the "spliff poster" as shown below, but they say it was issued in 1973 for Catch a
Fire. If I'm not mistaken, this poster was issued for the re-release of Catch a Fire in 1975. It is my understanding
that the original Catch a Fire was only issued in the Zippo cover and it was not until 1975 that the new cover with Bob smoking
a spliff was issued, making this a 1975 poster and not 1973. Am I wrong? Please correct me if I am.

This is the second version of the "I" Island logo since Bob had come on board. First issued
in late 1976 and on all items starting in 1977 with Exodus, the "I" now has a sun and palm tree in it. This
logo was used from late 1976/1977 through 1991. Starting in 1991 with Talkin' Blues a new logo was used. The Legend promo
posters in 1984 were the last official posters to use this logo.
Starting with Talkin' Blues in 1991 Island used this new logo (a sun and palm tree) They no longer used
any form of their "I". They currently still use this logo.
Some earlier logos as well as the 1976/77-1990's logo
1973
I don't believe any posters were issued for the original release of Catch A Fire.
The main promotion item I know of is the "Eye Chart" which is a cardboard display & not a poster.
1973 Island poster for The Wailers second Island LP 'Burnin'. Measures 20" x 30"
1975
1975 Island #1 poster for Bob. Not tied to one particular LP. Photo was taken at 56 Hope Road by the
wonderful photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker.
This poster was also included in the Island press kit for
the 'Exodus' LP in 1977.
Visit Kim's website at www.lenswoman..com and keep your fingers crossed that she releases her photos of Bob in a new photo book.
This poster brings up one of the first questions. This is poster #1 yet it
has the Island logo used after Rastaman Vibration but below you will see #13, #42 & #50 which are posters issued
between 1975 & 1976 using the original logo. I only know of this poster being issued with the Exodus press kit but
how can it be #1 then. Was it issued before in 1975 with an original Island logo & then re-printed with the new logo?
Hard to explain but it raises some questions that need answering. Anybody know the answer?
This poster was issued in 1975 with the re-release of the Catch a Fire LP. Although this poster says nothing
about Catch a Fire both use the same photo of Bob.
This poster was part of the Island numbered series
with #13.
1975 Island Records 20" x 30"
Although this poster is very similar to
the one posted above it has significant differences.
The main difference is that it does not contain a
number (#). The image of Bob is also reversed and the
shade of yellow used for Bob Marley and the
Island logo is a different yellow.
This poster was also issued folded, I assume in a press kit.
This poster was issued folded and inserted into the Live album which was released in 1975 following
the release of Natty Dread. There were three different version of this poster produced. 1) Largest of the three, was not folded
and numbered #42 (shown above) 2) Folded and numbered #42 and came with the initial releases of Live 3)
Folded with no number. It came with later issues of Live and is the smallest of the three.
Folded with Island #24. 18x...........
Folded with no number. This poster came with the later releases of Live.
How you
can tell that it is smaller is by looking at Bob's guitar cord.
With this poster you can barely
see it coming out of the bottom of
Bob's guitar. Now look at the top poster , you can see the whole
thing.
In the middle picture you can see some of it cut off.
1976
My personal favorite of all of the promo posters simply because I love the photo of Bob. Taken in a Los
Angeles motel by Kim Gottlieb-Walker it was issued with the number 50 and measures 20" x 30".
1976 Island Records Poster for the American Leg of Bob Marley & The Wailers Rastaman Vibrations Tour. Measure 24"

This is a smaller poster which came folded in half. It was possibly included in a Rastaman Vibration press
kit?

1980 Bob Marley & The Wailers Uprising UK poster. Came folded looks official but no Island logo anywhere. 18"
x 24"
Although this site currently is not dealing with concert posters for the most part this poster is included because
it is a special blank tour poster in which the promoter/manufacturer printed the Island logo.
Promoters could fill in
the bottom with their venue info and date. This was used for the German tour dates. 24 x 36
22" x 17 7/8" Not sure of the exact date of printing, this is a Tuff Gong poster made in Jamaica.
It is similar in style to other Tuff Gong posters.

A great picture of Bob!
Movie & Book Posters
This is a unique poster for the Swedish movie 'Want So Much More to Believe". What makes this poster
related to Bob Marley is the fact that Johnny Nash the star of the movie moved Bob to Sweden to write songs and record the
score to the movie. Sadly no score ever saw the light of day. There is plenty of info about Bob's days in Sweden floating
around. The film was released in Sweden on Sept 4, 1971. It stars Johnny Nash and Christina Scholin. This poster is from Yugoslavia.
